Last year, shortly before I ran away to Pantoland, I was awarded a DYCP (develop your creative practice) grant by the @aceagrams. 🙏🙏🙏
Now that panto is over, I’ve finally been able to take the time to really flex some new muscles and collaborate with these maestros. Yesterday, we spent a full day in the studio, playing with ideas, and quite by accident cooked up something rather glorious (and very different to my usual cabaret work). We might just use it in the upcoming residency. We’ll see. We’re still playing. To actually have the freedom to do that is a Goddess send.
Fellow artists, there’s money to be had out there. Go get it and let me know if you need any help in the application process. I had tremendous help from Simma Gershenson and Robert Bridger for which I am hugely grateful. The application ain’t easy but it’s soooo worth it.

This is Nettie, my singing teacher. We’ve been working together since 1872. Today is her birthday. She shares the date with her beloved Jacques Brel.
One day, I’ll sit down and write about Nettie. And I probably won’t stop writing because she’s everything.

All day I’ve been pondering the same question: H

All day I’ve been pondering the same question: HOW? How did he pull it all off? How did an openly gay man play a working class female prostitute on prime time television in 90s Britain and get away with it? We all lapped it up but wasn’t this everything that Tory Britain had taught us to despise; to fear? And yet, still, somehow, Lily became of all things… a National Treasure!
I hid so much of my sexuality in those days: my copy of Manuel Puig’s ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’, that copy of Smash Hits, and God forbid my parents catch me watching “those” scenes from ‘In Bed With Madonna’. And yet, still, somehow, we all sat together, three generations of family, and laughed with Lily. We took her to our hearts as we had Victoria Wood and Morecambe and Wise before. She stitched herself into the very seams of society. What sorcery was this? My Dad would say the cream always rises to the top. I don’t know the answer but I’m bloody grateful that I was around to bear witness. Paul O’Grady was a total legend and today is a sad day.

Approximately 262 years ago, I was doing a gig in Jersey. Mid duet, whilst my colleague was singing, I let the mic swing low. No agenda. No secret meaning. I was just enjoying the music and letting the mic swing. That night, we received a complaint. My “phallic” gesturing had been deemed wholly inappropriate. Ya what now? It took me a while to even put 2 and 2 together. Go figure. Stumbling upon this photo of #SammyDavisJr all these years later has just made me smile.
